ProjectB is glad to present the first solo exhibition in Italy dedicated
to the American photographer Stephen Wilkes’ Day To Night series.
Since 1983, Wilkes has produced an outstanding body of work and is considered as one of the most iconic American photographers.
Wilkes began Day To Night, his most defining project, in 2009. Each of the photographs included is made of 1500 different pictures taken from a fixed vantage point over the course of 15 to 30 hours. The artist selects the most representative moments and spends months in the studio blending them into a single image. These pictures gather the entire spectrum of the lights and the experiences grabbed by the camera and allows the viewer to live a multidimensional experience, showing what’s invisible to the naked eye: the contraction of time.
“I love collecting moments of magic. That’s what I do.”
– Stephen Wilkes –
Via Maroncelli exhibition space hosts seven artworks selected from three photographic projects concerning different themes. In the main room, viewers can observe images depicting the great migrations of birds such as flamingos, albatrosses and sandhill cranes. Also the three works in the adjacent room are nature-themed and depict some of the most important natural parks in the world: the Yosemite National Park, whose picture is inspired by Albert Bierstadt’s painting Yosemite Valley, Robson Bight nature reserve, dedicated to killer whales and the Serengeti National Park, in which the artist depicts wild animals drinking. The last picture displayed represents an urban landscape, a view over New York Central Park with an evocative interplay of artificial and natural lights.
