To organise a group show, after some years in the art world, is a novel experience for us. Doing only solo shows was a deliberate choice of the gallery until the moment we were seduced by the idea of researching a specific geographical area. Iran was undoubtedly in the air, in our mind and desire and, after months of discovery and at times hectic work, our enthusiasm for this choice was nothing but reinforced. Of all the countries we could have chosen and will choose in the future, to start from such a great patrimony of culture, history and refinement was a great pleasure. A close look at concepts we keep on hearing and reading about in newspapers and television revealed the biggest surprise: the freedom of mind and of medium with which the Iranian artist creates. While the cultural roots are deep and ancient - and this is reflected in the themes such as notions of national independence, exile, alienation, nostalgia, feminism and cultural freedom - the media employed are innovative and reflect a young national spirit desiring to be abreast of the times. Iranian Art is new to ProjectB, a gallery which shares the same youth and enthusiasm as In&Out’s group of artists, and this is why we decided to start with as wide a perspective as possible, introducing this group of artists to the Italian public, with the hope of creating a connection and establishing a strong starting point for future projects.

Portare a compimento una mostra collettiva rappresenta per noi un’esperienza ancora nuova. Presentare un programma di sole mostre personali, è sempre stata una scelta deliberata della galleria fino a quando siamo stati affascinati dall’idea di indagare una specifica area geografica. L'Iran era indubbiamente già nei nostri pensieri e nei nostri desideri e mesi dedicati a un lavoro di preparazione talvolta frenetico, non hanno fatto altro che rinforzare il nostro entusiasmo. Di tutti i paesi che avremmo potuto scegliere, iniziare da un patrimonio artistico e culturale di così grande ricchezza è stato un privilegio. Uno sguardo attento a quel mondo, di cui così spesso sentiamo parlare nelle notizie di quotidiani e telegiornali, rivela la sorpresa di un’inaspettata libertà espressiva. Tanto quanto le radici culturali del paese sono profonde - e questo è evidente nell’eterogeneità dei temi ricorrenti di nazionalismo, esilio, alienazione, femminismo e indipendenza culturale - così invece i mezzi espressivi sono innovativi e riflettono uno spirito nazionale giovane e desideroso di essere al passo con i tempi.  L’arte Iraniana è novità a ProjectB una galleria che condivide lo stesso entusiasmo degli artisti di In&Out ed è per questo che abbiamo deciso di iniziare con una prospettiva che fosse la più ampia possibile, presentando questo gruppo di artisti al pubblico italiano, con la speranza di creare un legame e fissare un punto di partenza per i progetti futuri.

One of the signatures of this exhibition is the emphasis on the independence of Iranian Art. This freedom from reductive deformation challenges the orthodoxy that such art can be termed as Islamic Art or Middle Eastern Art. The concept of the veil is another area touched upon by the exhibition. Gender politics have particular significance within the world of Islam with the wearing of the veil becoming a symbol in itself. Elements of political Orientalism, anti Imperialism and resistance to secularism all play a role. These notions have different significances and resonate differently in the various regions within the Islamic World. For instance, in Iran, the wearing of the veil has two sources - personal belief and state edict - each distinct and at times not in harmony. In&Out also tacitly queries whether there is any difference between the two large groupings of Iranians – those at home and those abroad. Just as the Revolution and the war with Iraq forever changed generations of homeland Iranians, emigration greatly affected the other group. Notions of national independence, exile, alienation, nostalgia, indigene, feminism, cultural freedom and assimilation or lack thereof permeate the work of most Iranian artists, yet are interpreted differently by each group.

Una delle connotazioni di questa mostra è l'accento posto sull’ indipendenza dell'arte iraniana. Questa libertà dalla distorsione riduttiva sfida l'ortodossia che quest’arte possa essere definita come arte islamica o del Medio Oriente.
Il concetto del velo è un altro aspetto da considerare.

Le politiche di genere hanno un significato particolare all'interno del mondo islamico cosicchè indossare il velo diventa un simbolo in se stesso. Elementi di orientalismo politico, anti imperialismo e la resistenza al laicismo tutti giocano un ruolo.Queste nozioni hanno significati diversi e risuonano in maniera diversa nelle varie regioni all'interno del mondo islamico. Ad esempio, in Iran, l'uso del velo ha due fonti - le convinzioni personali e l’editto di Stato – entrambi distinti e allo stesso tempo in armonia.

In & Out pone anche  tacitamente la questione se non vi sia alcuna differenza tra i due grandi raggruppamenti di iraniani – quelli che vivono in patria e quelli invece residenti all'estero. Proprio come la rivoluzione e la guerra con l'Iraq hanno cambiato per sempre generazioni di iraniani in patria, l'emigrazione ha fortemente influenzato l'altro gruppo.Nozioni di indipendenza nazionale, l'esilio, l'alienazione, la nostalgia, l’indigeno, il femminismo, la libertà culturale e di assimilazione o l'assenza di tutto cio’ permea l'opera di molti artisti iraniani, concetti interpretati in modo diverso da ciascun gruppo.
